Ophthalmic Medical Assistant
Bishop & Company is seeking an Ophthalmic Assistant in the Honolulu Area. Position entails physician assistance with patient work ups and diagnostic testing. Looking for immediate start!
Job Summary:
This individual is responsible for performing an extensive number of data collection
functions, as delegated by the physician(s), to allow for proper diagnosis of the patient’s condition; demonstrating comprehension of the ophthalmic technician skills, as out lined by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO); and providing support to clinical staff of less advanced credentials.
Responsibilities:
Acquaints all new patients with the office procedures to which they will be exposed. Informs patients of the purpose of all tests personally performed and how they will be affected during the tests.
Obtains patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications.

Communication & Patient Care
a. Acquaints all new patients with the office procedures to which they will be exposed. Informs patients of the purpose of all tests personally performed and how they will be affected during the tests.
b. Obtains patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications.
c. Performs accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks to include:
- Visual acuity
-Confrontational visual fields
-Stereo testing
-Evaluation of motility
-Pupillary function tests
-Color plates
-Applanation tonometry (not necessary, but preferred)
-Refractometry (not necessary, but preferred)
-Retinoscopy
-Angle assessment by OCT
-Dilation of pupils
-Visual field testing
-Optic nerve scanning (i.e. OCT, HRT, GDx)
-Pachymetry
-Corneal topography
-Ultra wide field retina photography.
-Other tasks / diagnostic testing specific to the physician needs as a result of new technologies
-Assists physician with minor surgery, maintaining practice standards of sterile technique and infection control.
2. Triage
a. Determines which patient should be taken next from the waiting room to have testing initiated. Escorts all patients from the waiting room for data collection. Following testing, advises as to who will see them next and make the patient comfortable during wait.
b. Maintains a smooth flow of patients to the physician, altering the test sequence as required.
c. Provides telephone support regarding ocular emergencies, prescription refills and patient care questions.
d. Communicates with reception and fellow ophthalmic technician to facilitate proper patient flow.
e. Rotate as Tech Station Concierge to facilitate flow.
f. Scribe for doctor as needed per clinic needs.
3. Exam Room/Instrument Maintenance
a. Troubleshoots instruments as necessary.
b. Replaces bulbs.
c. Checks connections.
d. Performs archiving functions according to manufacturer recommendations.
e. Maintains exam rooms with supplies including samples (contact pharm rep as needed) and patient education brochures
f. Cleaning of exam rooms, dilation area as needed
g. Instrument sterilization
h. Reports any continued difficulty to clinic manager.
4. Administrative
a. Audits clinical supply levels, ordering, as necessary.
b. Cross coverage in surgery scheduling department
c. Cross coverage in front/desk department
d. Cross coverage as scribe for doctor
e. Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications / Experience:
1. High School diploma, some college preferred.
2. Ophthalmic Assistant Certification, not required, but preferred. 3. Valid CPR certification.

Additional Information:
- Type: Temp-Perm Opportunity
- Schedule: M-F, 8:00am-4:30pm
- Pay: starting at $22/hr. dependent on experience
